Microalgae live in the upper layers of all water ecosystems. They are microscopic organisms used in many biotechnological applications: food, biofuels, cosmetics, supplements and drugs, fertilizers, wastewater treatment. Another use with great potential is the use of marine microalgae as novel drug delivery systems. Such use has advantages over standard drug delivery systems as they mimic the natural membranes and are environmentally friendly.
