Representatives from five Ocean4Biotech member countries took part as a presenters in the “Integrated advanced training course on Blue Biotechnologies, Aquatic products and Blue Bio-economy“.
Ocean4Biotech MC Chair Ana Rotter (Slovenia) had a presentation “LivingLab Game on BlueBiotech COMM strategies”. Ana Rotter presented the importance of science communication in these days scientific world and shared her first hands experience on how to develop scientific communication skills. Training included interactive part in which trainees were asked to complete short exercise. Moreover Ana Rotter participated in the roundtable: “Opportunities beyond research: the role of coordination actions”. Roundtable discussion was focused on the coordination mechanism to be established to unlock the innovation potential of the Blue Biotechnologies sector in the Mediterranean area.
Ocean4Biotech MC Member Hjörleifur Einarsson (Iceland) prepared lesson titled “Marine bioeconomy and biotechnologies”. Hjörleifur Einarsson briefly introduced concept of the Bioeconomy, gave some examples of biorefinery approach, which highlighted the importance of technical transfer from university to industry.
Ocean4Biotech MC Member and WG2 Chair Susana P. Gaudêncio (Portugal) had a lesson “Bioprospecting of Marine Resources and International Protocols for Protection”. Susana P. Gaudêncio presented concept of bioprospecting and necessarity to avoid biopiracy, which is the unethical appropriation and exploitation of genetic/biological resources. Moreover, the Nagoya protocol on access and benefit-sharing was introduced.
Ocean4Biotech MC Member Alexia Massa-Gallucci (Malta) had a presentation “Developing business: interaction between research and private companies”. Alexia Massa-Gallucci presented a several examples of interactions between research and private company that can lead to the development of business within the field of marine biotechnologies.
Ocean4Biotech MC Member Fernando Reyes (Spain) prepared a lesson “Bioprospecting of Microbial Resources at Fundación MEDINA ”. Fernando Reyes introduced the concept of bioprospecting, creation of the MEDINA´s microbial strains collection and good practice examples on the implementation of the Nagoya Protocol in Spain.
